This material I've just been reading about on various biker/sports sites sounds like it's the perfect replacement for skatepads, possibly even better than the old-style plastic armadillo's. Surprised

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EBWGbhsuws

It's so thin and pliable that when made into clothes they don't look padded at all, but they can take impacts so well it's used for ski, motorcyle, and downhill mountain-biking gear.

Some d3o products:

I think I'd like the quiksilver protect gear or the equetech riding shirts for summer, or the Armadillo Camo Jacket for winter. Smile

The faster the impact, the harder it gets?

That's exactly the opposite of what you want in a helmet. Especially when there's no padding between you and it.

I dunno, it looks like it takes the impacts of shovels pretty well. I guess there must be some padding and some absorbtion before it stops the blow from going any further.

I just like the idea of being protected whilst looking like you're not: assuming it can do what they say it can. Smile

I guess the only way we'll know for sure is when someone gets some and tries it out. When I can afford it I'm hoping to get one, but with christmas etc I'm not going to be buying it soon, but if I do I'll let you know. Smile

(buying some online now)

This Japanese video shows it better .. more real impact.

For elbows and knees - yes.
For head - hmm .. maybe. But I don't think I'd trust it just yet.

I thought you'd like it Smile

I saw that Japanese vid and liked the impacts, although I know the Japanese like to hit each other with shovels (and worse) even without any padding, and look like they're enjoying it. Very Happy

AZN's are strange people - seems like pain is of great interests to them (in a weird curious fashion).

I'm a little late jumping on the bandwagon, but watching the 3D0 helmet/beanie thing of justice looks cool but I am still skeptical. I wouldn't mind trying some out, but at the same time you would think that impact would justify the stuff, not speed of impact. I know they can go hand in hand, but ultimate protection doesn't leave anything to chance you know (your helmet will stay the same density regardless of how fast you fail)

So Merlyn, I was wondering how it went with your d3O pads?

I'm tempted to buy the d3O beanie. . . so I can have at least some head protection without a helmet, so I'm sorta protected for general street heeling without looking like it. . . but I wanted to know how you got on with yours first? Cheers.
