To save confusion/hurt feelings, maybe we need some kind of posting guidelines on what is or isn't acceptable/allowed to be posted here? I looked in the FAQ but couldn't see anything that quite fits the bill.

Part of the reason I ask it that I wanted to respond to an interesting point that Gok Wan had (perhaps inadvertently) made which made me think about what does or doesn't "go" with Heelys, but I wasn't able to respond because it was locked.

I see that he didn't come on saying "OMG I love heelys they are so awesome!" but he didn't seem to be openly "trolling" either, or breaking any of the usual collection of standard internet forum etiquette rules - at least not that I saw - Maybe he did something wrong in the SB or sent abusive PMs or something that I missed? If he was being a pain, then good job mods/admins!

But if he did nothing other than post that he didn't think there were many outfits that go with heelys, and asking if we knew of any, I was thinking it's a little bit of a poor first impression to make, locking a new member's first thread for what is essentially simply expressing an opinion and asking for advice?

I may of course be wrong, and feel free to tell me if I am, and I don't want to step on any toes, I only mention this because I think it is for the good of this forum and of heelys in general: i.e., we have to be careful not to possibly scare away prospective new members who could keep the forum (and heelys themselves) alive and kicking.

Maybe to save people like me asking dumb questions, if a thread needs to get locked, the staffer doing it could post a little note saying: locked for trolling, or spamming, or whatever? Smile

Hope I don't seem out of line to say all that? As I said, I was just saying what I thought was best, and if I'm wrong I apologise as I may not have all the facts. Just trying to do my bit Smile

So yeah, to avoid similar issues, maybe we could have some posting guidelines, so that accidents are less likely to happen, and if we do have to lock a new member's thread, we can point them to the guidelines which explain why, and thereby maybe help more people keep getting into heeling? Smile

I guess the easiest way to say it is...

Do you think the REAL Gok Wan would have came on this site and asked in an obviously flaming tone what goes good with Heelys? Also, given the ammount of knowledge that Gok Wan has, you would think that, as a fashion advisor, wouldn't say something as poor as "What goes good with Heelys"

This then raises the point that this is someone who is intimidating someone else, and in a very poor fashion if you ask me. It was degrading to Gok Wan, and made the real person a douche.

So when it breaks down to it

HeelyChat does not endorse douches...

Hehe, maybe you're right - I just didn't think the tone was flaming, but it's cool - just wanted to be sure Smile

Guess it doesn't really matter tho because I started my own serious thread asking about "heelys outfits" so all's well that ends well I guess Smile

As for whether it's the "Real" Gok Wan - I assumed it was the same person, but maybe I am too trusting. Smile

I'd like some help with posting guidelines, too, especially this whole "necroposting" business. You're not supposed to "necropost" (post a new message in an old topic), but you're also not supposed to start a new topic on the same subject? (according to Slicer's reply to Merrie's Gamers thread) What are you supposed to do when you want to talk about something that has already been talked about, to either add your opinion or to see if opinions have changed? One policy or the other can be logically supported, but BOTH of them being discouraged simply discourages posting anything other than 100% new topics.

I've also noticed some people commenting on Merrie's copious posts, but they're all interesting and unique topics. I see no problem in this, and cannot understand why some people have any difficulty with this. Unless, of course, the goal of the users on HeelyChat is to keep a small, tight-knit group rather than grow and expand to dozens or scores of active members at once. I'm the type of person that prefers the latter, but I'm only a member here, and less than a year at that.

Is there a post-per-day limit that one should not exceed to remain in the good graces of the denizens of this site?

Is there an accepted method for bringing up an old subject?

I'm prepared to follow the rules for this site, but it's hard to do that when you don't know them.

WHAT IS WITH YOU AND GOK WON? He's an openly gay spammer... He's in the past....

But I think we should have some guide lines, and have a slang dictionary too. What "Necroing" is and what it means when someone says STFU...

Posting new topics on subjects not covered, OR posting new topics in a way that acknowledges what was said before: Good!

Necroing with original, updated, or insightful commentary that doesn't cover the same things already said back when the topic was alive, and done in a way that you realize that the discussion is old: Good!

Necroposting with "I agree" or directly responding to a post SIX MONTHS OLD: Bad! It's like talking to a corpse! You do not treat dead things as if they were alive!

Starting a whole new topic on something that was already covered (especially if it was already covered in great detail) without having any idea that hey, we might have talked about this before: Worse! It's like walking onto a Democrat forum and asking "Oh hey, I just heard of this lady Hillary Clinton, what do you guys think?" GEE, YA THINK WE MIGHT HAVE ALREADY DISCUSSED THIS?

I don't see a need to write these things down, because I think this is just common sense to anyone with Internet experience, but the ACTUAL rules are this:

1. Don't be pig-ignorant about when posts were made.
2. Don't be pig-ignorant about the fact that posts were made before.

But if you think you're going to get the luxury of rule of law, I run Heelychat at my own whimsy with an iron fist and I fully intend to keep it that way, and the other admins have only the general rule of "Don't ban anyone who doesn't actually need banning", which follows under the general rubric of "Don't royally piss Slicer off".

The Gok Wan post was a low-grade troll.

And with THAT, locked.
