| I love "My Fair Lady" - I've watched that like 70+ times when I was a kid (seriously). |

Nah, it's not an Austrailian accent - I know what it is because I've heard it many times before, but I was just being a little jokey.
What it is, is the accent actors do when they are trying to sound "too" british. . . I don't just mean when a non-english actor tries to fake an English accent, but it even happens when native brits do an accent which is intended to be seen by non-british audiences - they sort of "put on" an over-the-top fake accent, because that's what the foreign audiences seem to expect a british accent to sound like. It's somewhere between the "Mid Atlantic" accent you soemtimes hear on television, and what I believe is known as "Recieved Pronunciation" - a sort of overly-posh accent that some brits seem to like, especially some of the "upper class" brits.
Even I must confess to overdoing the accent a little in online chats with american friends because they find it so amusing. One day I decided to do a Sean Connery accent throughout a chat, and one of the new guys who hadn't met me before thought I (and all brits) always talked like that, LOL! Next time I spoke in my usual accent he didn't recognise me until I did my "Sean Connery" again, LOL. But yeah, as a result of this tendency to overdo the accent, 99% of people outside of the UK who think they know a british accent are actually just thinking of this "faked" or "overdone" english accent, which is what is used in that video. |
