I've got some fat scars on my wrist.
Although I just probably picked at the scabs one too many times... |

Do INNER scars count? I mean, I've got scars from stuff in my life, but some aren't appropriate here, and anyway, they're not from heeling. I've skinned my knees and elbows by falling a couple times, but those didn't scar me. Closest I have to a long term injury from heeling is my sprained ankle.
Pretty gross, huh? Sure, it's not bloody or showing bone, but look at that swelling. No, my feet aren't normally like that. It's not as swollen any more, but it still is a little around the ankle, and it's sure still sore. :\ |

I always wear my pads nowadays when trying the stuff that I know I might fall on, so despite some pretty nasty falls I always come out of it alright. The worst thing I ever did was the first day I got my heelys and couldn't even glide yet.. . . I hadn't bought a helmet at that point, and the first thing I did was land flat on my back. It knocked the wind out of me so bad I couldn't breathe for a while, and I cracked my head so hard I went to the hospital just to be safe, but luckily was just a low-grade concussion. But yeah, that's why I figure not wearing pads when learning something risky/new is just asking for it.
Once when I was first learning to drop in on my off-leg on a big quarter-pipe I fell and due to the speed I was doing from the drop I must have slid 20 feet across the tarmac - so hard it took about a quarter inch of plastic off my wrist guards. . and we're talking toughened ABS plastic here.. . so I can only imagine how the bones would have been showing if I hadn't been wearing them. So yeah, moral of the story is: wear pads and a helmet kids. Trying to stick to fashion and look cool is one thing, but you can always buy new clothes - you can't buy a new head (Wish I could - mine is ugly as sin)
Just kiddin' |

God I love those things. |

Inner scars huh: Some of the stories I could tell Never mind, we all live and learn.
BTW AMN, been meaning to ask, since you said you did your ankle by grinding and I'm just starting grinding: how did you do it exactly? If poss I would like to avoid making the same mistake. Hopefully some good can come from it eh? |

In short, I got cocky. After successfully pulling off front-sides with my right foot first (opposite of what you appear to be doing in your grind vid), which I had built up to properly, I decided to hop on with my left foot forward, as if it was no big deal. Well, my right foot wasn't ready to be the primary weight bearer on a slippery rail. I don't remember the position my foot was in as I fell on it, but I do remember how it was turned out much more than usual as I was rolling on the ground on pain, and how it was just kind of flopping around in shock and building pain.
My advice is to work up to it every time you try a new grind. Don't assume that being able to do a front side means that you can just hop on a rail any old way you feel and pull it off.
That said, it's a safe bet that my weight and unprepared muscles were contributing factors. Lighter (normal) people and those with stronger ankle muscles will be much less likely to suffer the same fate. |
