Hey If this is in wrong place move it plz.
Id like to know If anyone can tell me if there is a specific type of half pipe which will work better with heelys or a specific way to build it instead of the normal one. Im trying to convince my parents to build a half pipe for me since There isnt any skate parks here.
Thanks,

I'm building a halfpipe too, and I've been wondering the same thing.
The transition is what matters....as in the way it curves from the coping to the flat. It has to be just right to be the best for heelys. The transition of the vertigo halfpipe is just right for heelys, so I'd build one like that. |

i think dave said the best is 7-8 for the rtanny and that the vertigo pipe is 7.5
what those numbers mean, i have no clue. |

Maybe it's some kind of ratio of the arc between the two points (the coping and the point where the ramp becomes flat) |

| i'd bet that number represents the radius of the curve. That means, when laying out your pipe sides, you'll want to make a giant compass with a 7.5 foot leg to draw the curve of the pipe. a quick google for building a halfpipe will get you all the other info you need as far as materials and method. |

I'm not sure if it could be the radius. Then the diameter would be 15ft, and the ramp's only 6ft tall.....
maybe the diameter. |

Is the top of a 6' half pipe, specifically this "perfect" one at Vertigo, VERTICAL? Or, is there a little angle to it? I'm betting it's not vertical, but that the extension is, and that the extension is 8 or 9 feet. If the diameter was 8 feet, then the radius would be only 4 feet, which makes a pretty small and tight curve. That would make the top of a 4' pipe totally vertical. |

I know the 6ft isn't quite vertical. And the extension is about as close as you can get, but still not a 90 degree angle. |

its a 7.5 foot radius, not diameter
it hits vert at 7.5 feet, but because the oververt is, well, over vert, it goes .. well, oververt, up to 9 feet |

| 8, a standard rule for flat is it should be twice the height, but heeler tend to prefer a little less |

Just to help you out a bit...
You don't want to go any 'faster' than a 7' radius. Even if you are building a miniramp (aka 3' or 4'), stick to the 7'+ radius formula. To get that radius, take an 8' long 2X4 (or something similar) and attach a nail at the 7' mark (or 7.5' if you plan on a 7.5' rad). Tie a string to the nail and run it all the way back to the bottom of the 2X4 and put a pen/pencil on the end of it. Attach the 2X4 to the trans plywood with the bottom of the 2X4 meeting the point at which your flatbottom will attach with the 2X4 running vertical. Use the pencil as a compass and draw an arc. BAM. Perfect trans. Instead of doing that on every peice of trans, cut out the 1st one and use it as a template for all others.
Remember to use a fresh blade in your jigsaw and take your time!! |

I absolutely agree with Deez. Heelers need halfpipe radius. People with wheels on the front of their boots/boards don't really understand how much of a necessity this is; even pro team members have problems with low-radius halfpipes. (I think the phrase "Try pumping it manual" might apply to curious skateboarders.) Unless you think you can get a whole lot of incredible skill very fast, a low radius is going to lead to frustration.
Similarly, things like additional vert on top of a halfpipe (a 6 foot halfpipe might have a 5.5 radius and 6 more inches of pure vert) and oververt make things harder.
On the other hand since it is going to be a gentle slope I don't really see the need for 8 feet of flat. Try like 6 feet of flat, maybe 5, if you're going with a 4 foot halfpipe with 7 feet of radius.
(I still want someone to try a gentle ellipse, but that'd be hell on pumping...) |
