On the wikipedia page about heelys it says:
| Quote: | Sponsorship
For people who have attained a very small degree of technical skill and little proficiency with the sneakers, Heelys, Inc. provides sponsorships with "Team Heelys". Almost for doing nothing, these people get free heelys, wheels, and get paid to go to demos. They also get paid access to practice in skateparks, even for those parks that charge an entrance fee. There is a National Pro team for Heelys which consists of David Chau, Bobby Curiel, Hailey H.,Brian M., AJ Roth, Danny M., Stefan, Nikolai, Austin P., and Kody. |

Sounds like it's been edited by a hater? I'd say the Sponsored skaters have more than "a very small degree of technical skill" - should we fix it? |

so fix it... that's one of the 'nice' things about wiki. Anyone can add/modify/delete information. Also one of the reasons it's not an acceptable source for research papers.

And the big reason why I don't take it seriously anymore.
Did you know there's ongoing subtle vandalism? As in, key, hard-to-source tidbits are intentionally modified.
Bottom line: Wikipedia is not a resource at all. |

Whilst I agree that wikipedia sometimes isn't considered an acceptable source for official research, I think it's going a little too far to say it's not a resource at all (no offence, slicer)
Granted, sometimes a page can be vandalised, but it's usually pretty obvious, as the vandals aren't usually smart or subtle - and a lot of the time when I want to know what something is, and google doesn't quite come up with the goods, my old friend wikipedia can be really informative.
I'd say it is a very good resource, as long as you use a little common sense etc. |

Hopefully I didn't come across as meaning that, and this is just another example of Merlyn's fine sense of humour?
I probably should have said "as long as we use a little common sense" rather than "you" as the latter could have seemed to be aimed at slicer due to his preceeding post (which it wasn't intended to be), and of course what I said applies to myself as much as anyone - and to any online source - not just Wikipedia. As long as we keep in mind that anything written online could have been written by someone who knows very little about the given subject, we're usually safe to learn from online sources.
If I did come across as a little preachy I apologise as it was not my intent - I just like learning stuff, both online and from various sources (including wiki's) as I have learned a lot from them over the years, and so far (touch wood) haven't had too much trouble with misinformation as what I learn is generally backed up by later further learning etc.
Take heeling for example: I wouldn't have learned half as much, half as quickly, if it wasn't for the resources of Heelychat, backed up by youtube (of all the places, I hadn't previously considered youtube a useful learning tool, just a place to see some fun videos, but now I know that it too is a valuable resource if used right)
So, if we all help out in the true spirit of wiki's (by offering corrections when we see errors) the online resources of the world get better and better, and other people may also realise the incredible benefits the internet provides when it comes to learning. Just think: 20 years ago if you wanted to learn something you pretty much had to find a book on it, which could mean having to go to the shops or the library etc - and if it was an esoteric branch of knowledge you might not be able to even find the book you need. Now, with a little skill and care in using the right online tools, we can KNOW almost anything we desire, at the touch of a button! It's truly incredible if you think about it.
This is why I sometimes offer bits of information regarding the heelypedia, such as when I notice differences between the details of Heelys on there, and ones I have purchased - it's not because I'm trying to be picky or critical - far from it, I love the Heelypedia and must use it a dozen times a day - it's because I like to do my bit to keep online resources accurate so everyone else can benefit as much as I have
Long live online Heelypedia, Wikipedia and all those other pedia type things! |
